Don't get SMASHED... get home safely
Gold Coast City is a great place to have a night out with friends and this party season, Council wants everyone to get home safely.
More and more people seem to be getting the message that drinking and driving is really stupid as well as illegal, which is great news for all of us, but it seems there also is a high incidence of drink walking in Gold Coast City, which believe it or not, can be just as dangerous.
It's particularly prevalent in and around areas with high volumes of licensed venues, such as Surfers Paradise.
You don't have to be drunk for alcohol to impair your brain function, slow your response times and reduce your ability to judge speed and distance. This is precisely why people who walk home after drinking alcohol (drink walk) are at great risk of being involved in traffic accidents and becoming the victims of robberies and assaults.
Gold Coast City hosts a number of large-scale events between October and January including Indy, Schoolies, and Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations. The Council will work closely over this time with licensed premises, hotels, tourist information centres and transport providers to educate residents and visitors about the risks of drink walking and provide information about late-night public transport.
If you're planning a night clubbing in Surfers, make sure the plan includes getting home safely. Before you head out, print this map of bus and taxi locations and put it in your wallet or handbag.
Other safety tips:
- arrange your journey home in advance
- if you have a designated driver, make sure they are not affected by drugs or alcohol
- catch public transport - telephone Transinfo (131 230) for bus timetables or Regent Taxis on 131 008
- use secure taxi ranks where possible (Cavill and Orchid Avenues in Surfers Paradise or Oasis Mall, Broadbeach)
- if you're going to walk home, choose well-lit streets and cross at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings
- stay in a group - don't let friends go off on their own
- never sit, rest or lie on the road
